For example, most trials indicating loss of body fat or weight were carried out in Norway and Sweden 1.

               Note. Reduction in body fat by taking CLA does not cause significant weight loss 1. In studies where a decrease in adipose mass was observed, muscle mass increased in the same proportion in the vast majority of cases.

                Metabolic syndrome and diabetes. The results of preliminary studies conducted on animals revealed that supplementation with CLA may increase insulin resistance, adverse effects, or normalize the metabolism of glucose, a beneficial effect 9, 10.

By modulating the action of certain chemical messengers, CLA would alleviate the inflammatory reaction and could also limit the allergic reaction (hypersensitivity) by reducing the production of certain antibodies (IgE). However, clinical studies conducted to date on humans yield contradictory results that do not support these claims 27-32.

Precautions

            In the absence of complete toxicological data, pregnant women, children, and people with liver problems should not exceed the normal dietary intake of CLA, i.e., approximately 1 g per day.

Contraindication

            Pregnancy and breast feeding. In a recent study of nine pregnant women, an additional 1.5 mg of CLA per day reduced the fat content of breast milk 33.

Gastrointestinal disorders and fatigue

             In diabetic subjects, the form "trans-10, cis-12" of CLA found in supplements could increase the sugar levels in the blood and insulin resistance 15. In other studies, researchers found an increase in insulin resistance in obese 17-20 subjects who took an ALC supplement containing only the compound "trans-10, cis-12". During one of these trials, this compound also reduced the level of good cholesterol (HDL) 18 slightly. A recent trial involving 40 subjects also found that taking a supplement commercially available (4.5 g daily) for 12 weeks could hurt the flexibility of the arteries 34.
